Scarlett Johansson’s year has been a mix of ups and downs. On the positive side, she is finally getting her solo movie as Black Widow and her sketch on Saturday Night Live about Ivanka Trump drew attention. On the negative side, she received backlash for agreeing to play a trans man in Rub & Tug before eventually dropping out and also faced criticism for dining with Woody Allen. However, recent news by Forbes has revealed that Johansson was the highest-earning actress in Hollywood between June 2017 and June 2018, which is a definite upswing for her image.
Scarlett Johansson has secured the top spot as one of the highest-paid actresses in Hollywood. She has earned this position due to her outstanding performance in blockbuster Marvel movies including Captain America: Civil War and the Avengers series. According to Forbes, Johansson’s earnings amounted to an impressive $40.5 million, mainly due to the immense success of Avengers: Infinity War. The movie has already grossed over $2 billion worldwide, although half of it might disappear if Thanos snaps his fingers again. Despite Johansson’s brief appearance in the movie, lasting about 10 minutes, she still managed to earn a substantial amount. However, there is good news for her fans as Black Widow will have a more significant role in Avengers 4, set to release in May 2019, as confirmed by screenwriter Christopher Markus in an interview.
Actresses’ earnings have been dominated by Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone in recent years. However, Scarlett Johansson has now taken the top spot due to the power of having a franchise under your belt. Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston also made the top three thanks to their upfront fees for Maleficent 2 and brand sponsorships, respectively. This highlights the three ways actresses tend to make big money: starring in a superhero film, commanding staggering upfront fees, or securing numerous endorsements. Unfortunately, the Forbes list also highlights the abysmal wage gap in Hollywood, as the top 10 list is comprised solely of white women. While this gap is difficult to close, Johansson may be in a strong position to do so with her forthcoming Black Widow payday.
