The annual event held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey saw the singer win big in nine out of the 11 categories she was nominated for, including the prestigious Artist of the Year award. The talented 33-year-old artist-songwriter also took home Album of the Year for Midnights and Show of the Summer, along with six more awards for the video and track for Anti-Hero. These included Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Direction, and Best Pop. During her acceptance speech for Best Pop, Swift expressed her love for making pop music, music videos, as well as country music.
As an artist, I enjoy exploring different music genres and this is all possible because of my fans who give me the opportunity to do so. It’s a great adventure for me to challenge myself to create music that is unique from my previous works. However, I must say that making pop music is my favorite, and I am grateful to my fans for allowing me to do what I love. I won my second award for Song of the Year for Anti-Hero and I feel very fortunate to have Jack Antonoff, one of my best friends, as a songwriting partner. We have been making music together since 1989 and we will continue to do so until 2089! When I started writing songs at the age of 12, it was because of specific emotions like insecurity or self-loathing that I felt isolated in. But when I perform these songs live and hear the stadium singing back to me, it gives me a sense of relaxation that maybe we all share similar issues. I am so grateful to my fans for this award and their support, thank you so much!
During the awards ceremony, Swift was awarded Best Direction for her popular track Anti-Hero, marking her third win of the night. In her acceptance speech, she expressed her gratitude to her ‘brilliant collaborators’ and emphasized that directing is a team effort. The singer went on to thank her editors, cinematographer, director of photography, and the actors in the video. Swift’s fourth win of the night came as she was awarded Video of the Year for Anti-Hero. She expressed her disbelief and appreciation for the fan-voted award, stating that the past year had been an adventure of a lifetime. With a total of 25 awards, Swift now ranks second in all-time MTV VMA winners, behind only Beyoncé with 28 wins (two of which were earned as part of Destiny’s Child). Madonna and Lady Gaga are also among the top winners, with 20 and 19 VMA awards, respectively.
