Scarlett Johansson’s Surprise Engagement Announcement Steals the Show at Venice Film Festival

From August 28 to September 7, the 70th Venice International Film Festival was held in Italy and attracted countless celebrities such as George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, Scarlett Johansson, and Carey Mulligan. Although this film festival is the oldest in the world and always garners attention, the 2013 event generated several noteworthy incidents involving both those who participated and those who did not.

According to a report from Agence France-Presse, Koji Hoshino, the head of Studio Ghibli, announced the retirement of Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki during the premiere of his latest film, Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises). While the film festival was ongoing, Miyazaki was not present himself. Scarlett Johansson, on the other hand, caused quite a commotion when she appeared at the Venice Film Festival premiere of Under the Skin sporting an engagement ring.

Reuters was informed by Johansson’s publicist that the actress is engaged to French journalist Romain Dauriac. Another Hollywood celebrity, Lindsay Lohan, made headlines for not attending the premiere of her film “The Canyons” at the Venice Film Festival.

One of the most talked-about movies at the festival is Gravity, directed by Spanish filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón. It premiered worldwide and received glowing reviews, with many predicting it to be a leading contender for the Oscars in 2014. Meanwhile, the reaction to Under the Skin, a film by British director Jonathan Glazer, was mixed. While The Guardian hailed it as “the best film” of the festival, another review on The Independent criticized it as a “ridiculous science fiction movie about an alien hitchhiker.”
