Scarlett Johansson: The Struggle of Being Typecast as a Seductive Actress

During a recent conversation, Scarlett Johansson revealed that she had previously been typecasted in sexy and seductive roles. In the early stages of her acting career, the 80s icon felt as though she couldn’t escape this image.

Scarlett Johansson has revealed in a recent podcast episode of Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi that her previous team directed her to take on provocative roles when she first started acting. Her roles in movies like Lost in Translation, Girl With the Pearl Earring, and Match Point showcased her sensual and attractive image. “I did Lost in Translation and Girl With the Pearl Earring when I was 18, 19, and I was in that phase of self-discovery. Somehow, I was guided to become this hyper-sexualized actor, the object of desire, and then suddenly I felt stuck there, unable to get out of it,” the 38-year-old actress shared.

Scarlett Johansson admitted that roles that solely focused on her physical appearance didn’t help her career progress. “With that kind of sexy image, you know, the brighter you shine, the sooner you burn out and you won’t have any chance beyond those types of roles. It’s an interesting but frustrating problem to have. However, we have to face it and try to establish a position in different projects and work with better teams,” the 1984-born actress shared.

The American actress was once considered a “sexy icon” when she appeared on screen with a seductive image. The beauty candidly revealed that she went through a really difficult time while filming Lost in Translation with Bill Murray. “Our characters had a strange and deep relationship, which was really challenging for me. I struggled with it for various reasons. When I got out of the role, it felt like a weird dream,” the actress shared. Scarlett Johansson also recalled that her role as Black Widow in Iron Man 2 was initially exploited in a sensual way. She worked with director Jon Favreau and Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, to turn the character into a more progressive and nuanced persona.

Scarlett Johansson has emerged as a prominent contender for the 2020 Oscars, thanks to her roles in Jojo Rabbit and Marriage Story. In a recent interview, she opened up about constantly being “sexualized” in Hollywood, which made her think that her career was nearing its end as she wasn’t getting offers for the roles she truly wanted to play. However, over time, the Avengers: Endgame star has moved away from characters that focus on physical appearance to pursue more complex roles that require exceptional acting skills. In recent years, she has received critical acclaim for her performances in Marriage Story, Jojo Rabbit, and is gearing up to return to the screen with Asteroid City and My Mother’s Wedding. As a mother of two, Scarlett also revealed how her children have influenced her approach towards work, emphasizing the importance of pursuing a career that brings personal fulfillment.
